Course Objectives: Staple Draping

What will students learn in this staple draping series?
The students will:

Develop an understanding of how clothing began with a brief history of garments as seen through staple draping.

Develop an understanding of the body and how clothing is formed over the body.

Start learning the shapes that can make up a garment.

Learn some practical applications for geometry.

Develop an understanding of the process it takes to create clothing or a fabric sculpture.

Learn to create garments on a body, using staples, used fabric and scissors.

Develop a sense of re-use and re-purpose. This process helps train students to create new items out of material that’s readily available to them.

Most importantly, this process helps students to look at the world with new eyes. They will see available materials all around them, and will start to recognize the shapes behind the clothing they see and wear every day.

The benefits of staple draping for the student

The materials are cheap and easy to find. Students can do this on their own without a lot of training or equipment. It’s fun, fast and engaging, and the process can be easily shared with family and friends. They will be empowered by the ability to create what they imagine and to see their results quickly.

Conclusion

The process of staple draping helps develop a connection between designing a piece and creating it physically. It helps train students to create their ideas without having to learn proper pattern construction. Students can start to see bodies and clothing shapes more clearly. In short, it helps with the formation of a practical imagination.

The materials are inexpensive and easy to find. The tools required are simple. This process makes creating less intimidating than a blank canvas, a standard commercial pattern or an expanse of expensive material.

The basic steps are easy enough to follow that a serious beginner can create a basic garment quickly and simply. There are also so many potential variations on the process that the most advanced students won’t have the chance to get bored.

Students with interest in art, sculpture, fashion, interior design, history or even math can all find interest and potential applications for staple draping. It also helps encourage students who don’t feel they have creative abilities. There’s no great skill required to create a basic stapled garment. Since the body shape beneath the fabric tells the student how to proceed, the student can follow those steps naturally and logically. This simple process can help build confidence.

Most importantly, there is no wrong way to staple drape. Students are daily confronted with rules and regulations, often without understanding the reasons behind those rules. Learning a process that they can’t get wrong is incredibly freeing.
