Nebula Enthroned is a wheelchair and rider inspired by images from the Hubble telescope and the dance costume techniques of the Ballets Russe. In simple terms, nebulae are where stars are born and where they go to die. In this piece, the rider fuses with his chair and become the captain of his own ship, finding his way through the universe. The wheelchair wheels are quilted and painted to resemble whirlpool galaxies, and the rider's pants and jacket are custom-built fabrics made with remnants from a fashion event. The silk and metallic cloth nebula "sail" is built out of remnants from opera costumes and sewn together with hundreds of yards of fishing line. Nebula Enthroned was originally created with the model Xavier Cross as the rider, but can also be shown with a custom-made velvet mannequin for long term exhibits.
