"Ours Not Yours" started life as a printed uterus, became a protest sign during the Black Lives Matter movement and the pandemic shutdown, was embroidered during a fraught cross country trip the summer of 2024, and was finished right as the first of the authoritarian executive orders went down in the US in 2025.
"Tangerine Skies" was the result of a prompt and a challenge from the brilliant TELEPHONE art game.
"Pieces of Me" is built from reused fabrics, photographs, and business cards. In this self portrait I am surrounded by images of my earlier selves and the artwork I make; all pieces of what make me who I am today.
"Self Portrait with my Great Grandmother's Shawl" is built from repurposed fabric, leather, and notions. The story goes that my great grandmother Pauline called in sick at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory so she could find a better job on the day of the notorious fire. Without that decision, I would not be here.
"Goddess in Process" incorporates photos taken during the making of the Kali Walker, which were then sewn to remnant cultist chenille and sari fabric and hand embroidered. The Kali Walker was fueled by two years of rage beginning with the run up to the 2016 election and a dear friend's death from a hate crime, and in times of personal strife, political trauma, and global distress I ask her to give me strength.
"Woven Community" started as a collection of rainbow scraps from various projects gathered together to decorate the front gate of the Alex Theater in Glendale in honor of Pride, and the idea grew to build an old style rag rug from the fabrics. This piece was part of the online exhibit "Rise" by Create Magazine. "Am I Blue" and "Weaving Community" are variations on a braided rag rug based on triangles. They were made from worn out clothing, TV show remnants, and leftover materials from dance costume designs.
"Justice" and "Vote" were created with donated embroidery floss and reclaimed textiles and notions, and were directly inspired by the events leading up to the 2020 US election. "Justice" was shown at Brea Gallery's Made in California 2021 exhibition.
The first "Joy" was part of Kate Carvellas' "Exposition D'Art Miniature", a virtual showing in a scale model farmhouse Kate built during the pandemic. She then invited artists to share work no larger than 3" wide. The exhibit was written up in the online magazine Art and Cake LA. This piece sold, and the second "Joy" was commissioned afterwards.
