These textile works began during the COVID-19 global pandemic in 2020 and were built using remnant textiles, donated embroidery thread, and notions.
"Self Portrait with my Great Grandmother's Shawl" is built from repurposed fabric, leather, and notions. The story goes that my great grandmother Pauline called in sick at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory so she could find a better job on the day of the notorious fire. Without that decision, I would not be here.
"Woven Community" started as a collection of rainbow scraps from various projects gathered together to decorate the front gate of the Alex Theater in Glendale in honor of Pride, and the idea grew to build an old style rag rug from the fabrics. This piece was part of the online exhibit "Rise" by Create Magazine. "Weaving Community" is a variation on a braided rag rug based on triangles. It started out as worn out clothing, TV show remnants, and leftover materials from dance costume designs.
"Justice" and "Vote" were created with donated embroidery floss and reclaimed textiles and notions, and were directly inspired by the events leading up to the 2020 US election. "Justice" was shown at Brea Gallery's Made in California 2021 exhibition.
The first "Joy" was part of Kate Carvellas' "Exposition D'Art Miniature", a virtual showing in a scale model farmhouse Kate built during the pandemic. She then invited artists to share work no larger than 3" wide. The exhibit was written up in the online magazine Art and Cake LA. This piece sold, and the second "Joy" was commissioned afterwards.
