The Goddess in Process

Laura Brody sculpts for the human body and its vehicles. Laura’s sculptures are conceived with a commitment to social justice and are inspired by the spirit of scientific discovery. Her belief that disability shouldn’t mean loss of beauty has lead to ‘Opulent Mobility,’ comprised of art, designs and inventions dealing with and reflecting on, disability and mobility.

Laura’s upcoming show at the 917 Garage in Silverlake is called The Goddess in Process, and features her latest piece for the Opulent Mobility series. The Kali Walker is crafted from PVC pipe, cardboard, repurposed leather and aluminum and stands six feet tall and four feet wide. Kali is the Hindu goddess of time and empowerment, and a renowned slayer of demons.

While disability and aging are demonized in our culture as tragedy, weakness, and something to be feared, Kali in her walker represents a different truth- that time catches up to us all, and that strength and ferocity are not measured by physical ability.

Laura Brody has 30 years of professional costume making, designing, and teaching experience. She’s taught at FIDM and in independent classes. Her mobility art (re*made wheelchairs and walkers) were shared by Frances Anderton on NPR and on The Improvised Life. She developed and co-curated Opulent Mobility with Anthony Tusler.
